Hunter Development Corporation is responsible for delivering a range of NSW Government projects and programs in the Hunter, in line with the Government's vision to support the region as the 'leading regional economy in Australia with a vibrant new metropolitan city at its heart'.
In 2016, The NSW Government announced a new framework for the future direction for the Hunter Region.
The release of the Hunter Regional Plan 2036 was bold and ambitious and HDC was tasked with delivering, coordinating and being accountable for achieving the vision and goals of the Plan.
Hunter Regional Plan
The Hunter Regional Plan will guide the NSW Government's land use planning priorities and decisions over the next 20 years, providing a framework to guide more detailed plans, development proposals and infrastructure funding decisions.
Through its role working closely with other government agencies and local councils, HDC will help the government achieve the following goals for the region:
- The leading regional economy in Australia
- A biodiversity-rich natural environment
- Thriving communities
- Greater housing choice and jobs
New Housing and Jobs
The Plan focuses on new housing and jobs and targets growth in strategic centres and renewal corridors. HDC will oversee and report on progress to ensure the vision in the plan is achieved.
HDC is also assisting with preparation of a Greater Newcastle Metropolitan Plan, the final version of which is expected to be released in mid-2018.
This Metro plan will have four key elements:
- Connect strategic centres in Greater Newcastle
- Develop a national centre of excellent for health and education
- Expand the capacity of Global Gateways - Newcastle port and airport
- Establish governance
