West Wallsend, Lake Macquarie

We own and manage more than 1,500 ha of former BHP Steelworks land in West Wallsend, Lake Macquarie.  Several planning strategies, including the Hunter Regional Plan 2041, have identified this land as a potential site to create environmental, economic and community benefits.

Project status

We are undertaking ecological studies of the site and will spend much of 2025 assessing zoning, heritage, contamination, economic and social needs, traffic, mine subsidence, bushfire risk and other technical matters.

Conservation

We are investigating opportunities to maintain and preserve areas of the West Wallsend land for environmental conservation.

Land zoned C2 – Environmental Conservation would be managed and protected in perpetuity against illegal and damaging use such as asbestos dumping, as well as feral animals and invasive plant species.

The amount and location of these lands will be determined by detailed site investigations.

Other land uses

These investigations will also align with government objectives to deliver community and economic benefits.

We will work with residents, Lake Macquarie City Council and local stakeholders to determine the social needs of West Wallsend and identify potential opportunities to create:

  • employment land to foster economic growth
  • a variety of residential-zoned lands
  • recreation land for vibrant community places.

West Wallsend is a unique area that is rich with culture, history and environmental value. While investigating land use opportunities, we will seek to preserve and enhance these values for both current and future communities.

Lower Hunter Freight Corridor

We will work with Transport for NSW to preserve land for the future Lower Hunter Freight Corridor in West Wallsend. This project is set to further support the region’s economic growth by allowing freight and passenger networks to grow.
